More Food Adventures
These foods were not necessarily all tried at the same time but I am going to group them all in the same post.
Picarrones- a dessert. a dough is made with pumpkin/sweet potato flavoring. Then they make a hole in the dough and put it in a vat of frying oil. That way it is essentially like a peruvian donut. They serve a couple with a sweet syrup. Its pretty good but definitely not my favorite dessert in the world. Similar to arroz con leche people serve picarrones on the side of the road like hot dogs in NYC.
Meat- Its a really good thing that I am not a vegetarian because there’s a ton of meat here in every meal. Most often we have been to a ton of places that are like “chicken” joints. People just order these really tasty fire-roasted chickens (Pollo a La Brasa) to share among everyone at the table. Usually served with salad and fries. Then there is also “anticucho” which is cows heart and is actually pretty good. There is Aji de Gallina which is this shredded chicken in this thick creamy sauce with potatoes. Lots of meat and lots of rice to go with that meat (ie. A lo pobre which is pretty much meat and rice). Also a lot of the meat is served not whole/on the side, but instead in a stew type of deal. Pretty good and different, but sometimes I miss a good old burrito!
Sangresita and Ants – I have also had some fun food adventures while being here. I have eaten Sangresita which is actually dried cow’s blood. Its OK, nothing special to make me eat it again. Also fried ants from the jungle which taste and smell like crunchy burnt chocolate. It was gross and although it was interesting to try it, I’m not going to seek it out. But who knows, I should always try new things: maybe I’ll try guinea pig before I leave.
